2007 Big Island Bodysurfing Championships...

Held on February 24 at Waipio Valley. 10th Annual contest slated for Hapuna Beach with Kua Bay for alternative location. Neither had waves so we ended up at Waipio Valley...

David, Steve, Doug, Tom, Eileen and myself got to the Big Island around 10:45AM, Friday. We got our van and headed North to see if we could find some waves before checking in to our condo at Waikaloa Villages.

After checking in, we went shopping for food & beer and went to Tom Wiggins'(Mader) house for the sunset scenery and BBQ...

Up at 5AM to go to Waipio Valley since Hapuna and Kua Bay are flat...

The event started with decent conditions before the trades picked up...

Then deteriorated rapidly. Strong current cross shore  made for lots of swimming. Judges had to move down the beach follow the contest zone.

Another great sunset! Leona played us song she wrote before we had to go. We had to leave early to catch our flight home so we could make the Pyramid Rock contest Sunday morning.

Always good fun! Not to mention scenic!
