Quiksilver ke Kaha Nalu Hanana `o Ehukai

Sponsored by Quiksilver and organized by Rick William of The North Shore Lifeguards Association

Before the contest...(7:41 - 8:43am). See more here.

Got there about 7:30am. Prime parking and lots of friendly faces!!! Waves are rolling in.

Part One...(8:44 - 9:46am). See more here.

First two heats are here.

Part Two...(9:50 - 11:11am). See more here.

Part Three...(11:14am - 12:35pm). See more here.

Great first half! Time to take a short break. "Rescue Race" coming next.

Lifeguard Rescue Race...(12:39 - 12:53pm) See more here.

12 teams of two participated in a race to save their partner in the water. The "rescuer" started by sprinting down the beach, then swimming through the break, grabbing their partner/"victim" to bring them to shore. Once on land they had to run across the finish line...Unreal!

The Kauai tandem of Gavin Kennelly and David Hubbard won the rescue race. As written by Dayton Morinaga.

Part Four...(1 - 1:44pm). See more here.

After the grueling rescue race, for some, back into the water to compete some more.

Classic Banzai Pipeline!

Part Five...(1:49 - 3:14pm). See more here.

I just kept shooting in case some kewl happened.

Part Six...(3:14 - 4:26pm). See more here.

Long day! Had to miss the ceremonies at Proud Peacock. Congrats to all that participated! Challenging conditions and great show of talent. Hope you enjoyed it :)

Parting sequence.

Not exactly sure who this is, but I've determined that he was wearing green and was late in the day at 4:26pm.

Cunningham received a total score of 102 (out of 120) in his two heats. He said it helped his cause to compete in the morning heats, when the winds were not as strong as the afternoon. North Shore lifeguard Abe Lerner placed second, one point behind Cunningham. Todd Sells was third, Steven Hong fourth, and Gavin Kennelly fifth. As written by Dayton Morinaga.
