Aloha Everyone:

Well, unfortunately - the 1st Annual Waimea Bay Shorebreak Shootout is CANCELLED for this year.  The swell dropped considerably last night and is only 2-3 occ 4 on the North Shore today - making da bay, flat.  So with that news - the contest is postponed for this year as this was our final weekend.  I did try to get an extension on the contest, but the City Permit's office said "no".  The process of an extension is lengthy and with a lot of paper work.

For our early competitors, you have the option now of getting a full refund of your entry and whatever extra money you put in for extra shirts OR you can get the shirt(s).  We won't be doing half&half.  It's either a full refund or your shirt(s).  Once I get all early entrants feedbacks - I will set up a date/time for you all to come and pick up your shirts.  For those who want refunds, I will mail you a check.

I apologize for any inconvenience caused, but - Da Bay Calls Da Day whether it's big Eddie Aikau waves or fun bodysurfing contest surf.  I truly appreciate everyone's positive notes and comments.  This contest will run next year as we have a generous offer from a big North Shore contest....so stay tuned!

Please feel free to call me if you have questions/concerns!

Aloha,
Mahina

3/13/08...

Hi Al:

Got a morning report from da bay from WB lifeguard, Mark Dombroski - and per Mark, TODAY would have been a perfect day to hold the contest (of course).  There is a nice sandbar to the left of the bay and is currently about 3-4 feet.  Mark says the swell looks to be dropping, but will give an afternoon report to me about 4pm.  So as of right now - it don't look too good for us since the swell is dropping already.  Should the North Shore be less than 6ft tomorrow -  the contest will be OFF for this year.

Da Bay Calls The Day......BIG or Small.

Aloha Competitors!!

The contest is on stand-by for this weekend as the NW swell that came in today was much bigger than forecasted.  Swell that came in today was in the 15 foot plus range shutting down Sunset & Pipeline, making Waimea Bay the only spot to surf.  So, now the waiting game as we need to see how fast this swell drops by this weekend.  I will be in contact with the Waimea lifeguards tomorrow through Friday to see if a nice sandbar has formed and all that.  So the official call might be late Friday.  For our outer island friends, hopefully you can hold out till Friday.  You will be the first ones contacted once we know what's going on since you're flying to Honolulu.

Thank you gang for your endless patience and I hope we'll be able to get this contest going!  Bust out your t-leaves and shake them a little for us!  LOL!

Please feel free to contact me #368-7749 if you have questions.

Aloha,

3/06/08...

Aloha Everyone:

Due to the diminishing NW swell with no weekend swells forecasted , the 1st Annual Da Hui Waimea Bay Shorebreak Shootout presented by Vitamin Water is POSTPONED for this weekend.  It will be pretty much 'flat' for the shorebreak for Sat & Sun, and most importantly, and another reason why the contest has been postponed in advance, is the shorebreak sandbar has disappeared.  Per ultra-veteran Waimea Lifeguard, Mark Dombroski - waves were breaking 2ft from shore today w/double-ups & backwash.  Thus making for unsafe contest conditions even if we had 2-4ft surf for this weekend.

So with 2 strikes against us, we'll wait for next weekend 3/15 & 16 - and is our final weekend.  Pray for surf, and big kine surf to take sandbar out!

Aloha,
Mahina Chillingworth

Afternoon:

Aloha Competitors:

OK - checked with the surf forecasters...this weekend is forecasted to have small surf.  Saturday might have some surf left over if this current swell doesn't fizzle out to quickly and then on the downward trend thru Sunday.  That swell that was supposed to boost back up on Sunday - is forecasted for Monday now...of course.  So it's a wait-and-see game at this point.

You may call me at #368-7749 or the contest hotline at #638-0306 to see whether the contest is on or off.  We should be able to make a decision by 6:30am.

With the amount of competitors we have - the contest will be a 2-day event.  Heats forthcoming.

Aloha,
Mahina

Morning:

Aloha Competitors!

Thank you so much for participating in our 1st Annual Da Hui Waimea Bay Shorebreak Shootout!  I can't thank you enough!  Just wanted to give you a head's up for this weekend.  Surf wise, it's expected to be 3ft in the shorebreak for Saturday.  If it's too small, we have a bump coming back in on Sunday in maybe the 4ft range for the shorebreak.  All Hawaiian scale.  So it looks good for this weekend.  I also wanted to remind you to please come early.  Parking will be a challenge, so if you can - dawn patrol it out to the North Shore if you're coming in from town, which most of you are.  We have 82 early entrants + beach entrants, so parking will GARANZ be tough.  There will be reserved stalls for Da Hui contest officials, so please don't remove cones.

Check in is at 7:45am at the Early Registration tent that will be up on the grass behind the lifeguard tower.  There will be two lines by last name:  A-K & L-Z.    So please come early to check in.  Some of you did not sign your waivers and/or did not submit money with your mailed entry form.  So you need to clear this up at the early registration tent, or you won't be able to enter the water.  Should you have friends/family that are coming for beach entries, please send them down to the beach as we will have a tent there to take beach entries.

Right now, as I mentioned, we have 83 early entries and will probably "cap" the contest at 124 competitors.  So if you have friends/family that still want to enter - first come-first serve.

We will call the contest that morning whether it's ON or OFF.  But that won't be till like 6-6:30am.  By then, most of you will be on the road.

Heats are currently being arranged and I will forward to you once it's completed.  However, even if your heat is later in the day - it's best you still come early for parking reasons.  If you come later, you'll be competing for parking w/the tourists too.

Call me should you have questions, #368-7749.

Aloha,
Mahina Chillingworth

"The Hui O He’e Nalu (a.k.a Da Hui) is a non-profit native Hawaiian surf group with over 30 years of existence and well known on the North Shore for its community service and credits to promoting ocean awareness. We aim to add this event to the list of our acknowledgments, as we are the first native Hawaiian organization to host a bodysurfing event on the North Shore of O’ahu. So this contest is long overdue. This contest will also be dedicated to Da Hui Member, Bobby Kaleikau, who passed on recently."

This event will be dedicated to the recently passed Hui O Hee Nalu member and my good friend Bobby Kaleikau. Please pray for him and his family.
